In 1935, the journal Light published a report by Dr Robert H. Hout, from Goshen in the United States, describing a case in which he had been involved personally as a result of his faculties as a sensitive. This report was discussed again in 1953 by Ernesto Bozzano in his book, Le Visioni dei Morenti (Visions of the Dying). Dr Hout knew from his "unsought experiences" that he was a sensitive, but beyond this he was quite uninformed about paranormal activity. Any implication of "hallucinatory dramatization resulting from an emotional crisis" should not, therefore, be read into the case. While looking after his dying aunt, who had a gastric tumour, Dr Hout noticed, just above his aunt's body, what appeared to be a formation of mist. As time passed, the misty cloud grew in length and began to take on an ever clearer outline, unmistakably human, until, finally, it came to resemble his aunt. This other figure, now apparently shrouded in cloth, had a youthful appearance; the face was calm, the eyes closed. The two parallel bodies were connected by a fluidic cord, which passed from one cranium to the other, and throbbed intensely as it conveyed energy upwards. At the same time, other people were beginning to materialize in the room: deceased members of the aunt's family as well as a mystic, hushed chorus. These phenomena were also seen by the doctor's sister, though only as "variously coloured lights". When, twelve hours later, his aunt died, the cord broke and then vanished. At this point, the spiritual figure straightened up, looked at the body of the departed, smiled at the doctor and rose into the air, to disappear together with the other spirits. Commenting on this case, s Bozzano recalls other instances of "fluidic deathbed doubling". He also points out how doubling differs from cases of bilocation, when the etheric body emerges fully formed from the physical body. (A. J. M.)
